Aah, a site map !

December 3rd, 2006

I am celebrating my fiftieth post or thereabouts. It took me six months to finetune the general perimeter of the main themes. Now that the scope is nicely stabilizing, I offer you a global overview of where this blog is going.

Three main themes / nine main categories

The three legs of mandarine’s theme palette are:

  • scientific thinking applied to anything my scientific mind sets itself onto
    • uncommon viewpoints, on any topic really — an exercise of rationality and doubt, sometimes non-politically correct, often inconclusive
    • strange ideas, occasionally bordering insanity — when absurd and technical, these ideas find their way to my other site: www.absidea.org
    • science stuff, when I feel I can add something to the zillion existing sci/tech blogs
  • lifestyle: sharing, advocating, boasting, proselytizing or pontificating (depending on your viewpoint) about my life and lifestyle in a small village in rural southwestern France
    • environment: sustained development concerns, energy, transportation, climate
    • epicureanism: small pleasures and French cuisine
    • parenting: young parent reflections
  • contemplation and other non-rational, art-related or faith-related topics
    • photography: my ‘art’work
    • reading/writing: and other litblogger stuff
    • faith & psychology: miscellany in the field of feeling and belief

New categories

I will therefore redefine my categories according to the above theme definition:

  • viewpoints
  • ideas
  • science
  • environment
  • epicureanism
  • parenting
  • photography
  • reading/writing
  • faith
  • and miscellaneous

I have edited older posts to comply with the new categories.

Nested list site map

Go to the site map page to have a (maintained) list of all posts in each theme. A post often appears under multiple categories if it cannot be classified under a single one.

Very nice. I will have to check out that site map. I am not very savvy when it comes to the Techno aspect of blogging.

Uh, the graphical theme map (bubble broccoli or whatever you think it looks like) is 100% manual (I mean drawn manually with Inkscape, but powerpoint or draw would do fine, I guess).
On the contrary, the site map page is automatically updated from the list of posts and the categories I assign to each. I can give the code to anyone who asks nicely (works for wordpress, I do not know about other blogging platforms). I got the idea and resources from Lorelle.

Believe me, getting to grips with the techno aspects is nothing compared to getting the writing part right.

Love your bubble broccoli. So esthetically pleasing, and it looks like some of the stuff we put into the math books I edit.
